The problems associated with post-mining in the regions concerned are various. At the socio-economic level, for example, the end of mining sites exposes workers to unemployment, idleness, poverty, immigration, and so on. To better cope with this situation, RandGold Resources, a gold mining operator in Mali, has decided to reorient miners of the village of Morila, in Sikasso region, to agriculture; a sustainable, multifunctional and environmentally-friendly farming. Songhai Center was then requested to provide its expertise.
In July 2017, a team from Songhai Center visited the Morila mining site in Mali for the feasibility studies of the project. A document was subsequently elaborated and validated by both parties for its implementation. In the same year, a delegation made of members of the government of Mali and the local authorities of Morila is sent to Songhai in Benin to experience the "Songhai miracle". At the end of an interesting stay, the authorities were more determined to set up an Agricultural Center inspired by Songhai model. An experimental phase of the project is then decided by the two partners to cover the period from August to December 2018. A team from Songhai Center is then sent to Morila mine site to start the work. The production activities already in place are fish farming, gardening, agroforestry and animal production with the breeding of turkeys, broilers, layers and others.
Towards better management of the post-mining period
With the creation of the Morila agro-ecological center inspired by the Songhaï model, RandGold Ressource would like to better cope with the post-mining period, an ambitious project that the mining operator seeks to undertake with Songhai Center as a technical partner. It also aims at providing new jobs for mine workers and indirectly, contributing to the development of the Morila region. Songhai Center, in this partnership, is required for the training and the construction of infrastructures on the site. The official launching of works took place on Monday, October 08, on the occasion of the forum on the reconversion of mines in agro-ecological centers inspired by the Songhai model.
