General
Crop production, Animal husbandry and Fish farming are the essential links in primary sector (primary production) at Songhai Center. All the activities carried out in each of these sectors are mutually dynamic. After production or harvesting of vegetables and crops from the market garden and perennial units of crop production, the residues (by-products) commonly known as waste are reincorporated into production. How is that done?
The by-products from Animal production, for example, the urine/droppings collected from our livestock end up in the compost production unit, where they become raw materials. We recycle them into compost, that we use instead of chemical fertilizers. To fertilize and regenerate the soil, that will grow new consumable crops again and again, which will also be used to feed and treat the different animal species.
In the case of plant production, the water collected after cleaning out the fish ponds are used to irrigate the crops. In addition to plant, animal and fish production, by- products are also valuable raw materials for us.
We use them in other ways such as, energy production (bioenergy) that is easily accessible to everyone – domestic biogas, gasifiers, etc. – for cooking, lighting and heating. This stamps out the risk of polluting the environment or destroying the eco-systems.
At Songhai, the environment and nature are privileged partners that we treat with great respect. Our option for “Organic Production” and “Zero Waste Production” is therefore easy to understand. This is what we call “integrated and sustainable agriculture”. In this way, people will eat healthily, to live better and longer.
At Songhai, we make the primary sector the engine of rural growth and the basis for the development of the secondary and tertiary sectors.
